The Humidifier "De-Mistified"

Wednesday October 18, 2006

You see it hanging there on the furnace. You walk past it all the time. But do you know how it works? Heck, do you even know if it works?!

The whole house humidifier seems to mysteriously make warm furnace air nice and comfortable. But it remains one of the most overlooked pieces of home heating equipment.

Do you know what humidifier component needs replacement every year? Well, in this tutorial Anatomy of the Home Furnace Humidifier I'll walk you through the components of this useful piece of equipment and you will come to understand how it works. Your humidifier will then be completely "de-mistified".

I need help with some wireing in my furnace. The fellow who used to own the house did the install with a 24v thermostat and I would like to install a 220v newer one I removed from an old install. No schematic. Neal

Line voltage thermostats like your 220v unit are typically used for baseboard and radiant electric heat. The 24v low-voltage thermostats use a step down transformer are typically used on electric furnaces and heat pumps, not often with radiant electric heat unless a large space. You don’t say which heating system you have, but my suggestion is to stay with the 24v system and just upgrade the thermostat.
