Matching Your Heating and Cooling System to Your Thermostat

Tuesday June 5, 2007
Did you know that you have to match your thermostat to your heating and cooling system and not all thermostats are interchangeable? When installing or replacing a new thermostat it is important to make sure to match it properly to the type of heating or cooling system you have in the home. There are millivolt systems which require no external power, there are low voltage 24 Volt systems which run off a transformer and there are straight up 120 Volt to 240 Volt line voltage thermostats that control electrical resistance heating systems.

So take a minute to understand the differences of these systems and how to match them by reading the tutorial Thermostat and Furnace Compatibility where I show you what to look for when identifying your thermostat and heating system, such as type of heating or cooling system, number of wires to thermostat, voltage and system characteristics.
