Also along the lines of “where you live”, you need to consider level of mineral deposits in your water. Two plumbers in my area of Southern California recommended against installing tankless heaters. Most of our water comes from wells or the Colorado river, both heavy in mineral deposits.
oooh – I wondered about that – mineral content of the water. That is what would turn me off of a regular water heater to begin with.
If you are worried about debris in the water clogging the inline filter,. I would put a pre-filter before the tankless. This is not a big expense.
If you are worried about calcification clogging the pipes in the tankless, don’t!
I’ve had a non-softend heater in my house for 3 years with no problems. The town I live in uses a well system to provide water. Last time my water was tested we were at 22 grains hardness. 8 is considered bad.
Besides that, every tankless company sells a install kit that allows you to flush warm vinegar through it for cleaning.
When looking into tankless do your research and ask questions. Don’t take the first response you get as law. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so be wise!
FYI, above post refers to gas tankless water heaters only!
How do I run vinagar throgh a tankless water heater?
Hello,
We just got a tankless installed. I can say really short it is the greatest thing I have ever had. With old one we were only were able to take one 5-8min shower, forget about filing the tub with hot water. We got Noritz 751 series. This thing is incredible, it has a remote control so that you can change the temperature and our installer explained to us if there is going to be any problems it will give us an error code. We did lot of research with which brand to go and we find out that Noritz was the best. Also when the installer came he reinsured us with the that info. The installer was good too, he was certified and had really good point about not installing recirculation pump we wanted. Also we moved the heater outside on the wall so it doesn’t use any space at all. If you need a good installer around the Los Angeles area you can try http://www.noritzheaters.com they are really good. And once again I recommend Noritz if you thinking tankless.
Hope it helps. Be well
I have a 1 year old Takagi T-k3 – it ran great until the heater core started leaking. Takagi will NOT back their product because we have hard water. They say all tankless mfgrs say the same thing. They say that the calcium in the water will make the core leak, due to hot spots. I think its a rip off.
I am stuck with it, and I love the tankless idea, but will never again buy a Takagi.
Can anybody help me, on my problem with tankless gas water heater, is heating stopping for minutes when its on n I have to push the reset button every time. what causes the stopping of the hot water.
Jason you are so right above mis-information. The market is fairly new to the USA but of course many decades old in Europe. Above all else make sure that anyone cleaning, flushing or servicing you tankless system. TURN OFF THE POWER. If electric turn it off at the box, if gas make sure the valve is shut off before doing any work.
Ron I have a good video on how to use vinegar for a complete flush as well as a step by step procedure. tankless flush.
