Is Your Basement Wet?

Friday May 2, 2008
With springtime comes rain. Lots of rain. And that may mean a wet basement.

In the tutorial Troubleshooting Wet Basement Problems I'll review common basement wetness problems and what you can do to fix them. We'll cover problems like general mustiness to condensation and leaking water.

Sometimes the fix is as easy as redirecting a downspout, others, well, read and see...

I’ve been living with a wet, damp basement for 15 years now. I’ve figured out some of the fixes mentioned and moving the water away from the house was one of them. Making sure the gutters and downspout is free of debris(so the water won’t spill over the side) was another. Now if only you get some kind alarm or notice when your sump pump goes bad…that would be perfect. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Chris,

Well the next best thing to a sump pump failure alarm is a little moisture or flood alarm device that triggers with a small amount of water. Place it next to the sump in the floor and it will serve as what you’re trying to accomplish.

I’ve got one hooked up in our home to the home automation panel but you can also have it hooked up to an audible alarm or to your security system for remote notification.

I had cement walls in my basement that i had to paint with UGL Drylock to stop water seepage/ Becasue of the texture to the walls (they were concrete pour molded to look like bricks)it took forever to paint with a brush. I ended up using a high power air compressor and a drywall hopper gun to apply the paint and it worked like a dream!
