Can you count on your Pilot?
It happens to most all of us about this time of year. Really no escaping it. You can try and avoid it, but at some point you make a decision to turn on the furnace.
And when you do there is that tiny little anxious question in the back of your mind, "Will the pilot light and furnace work?"

Hey there,
Thanks for the great info. I shut my pilot light off every year and never have a problem lighting it except that every year I forget to turn the gas knob from “pilot” to “on”. If you light the firnace and you aren’t getting heat, check that first. Also, great article on troubleshooting a furnace. I’ve had the problem for years that the fan runs continuously. There’s a control box to change that but it seems to do nothing. I was told that this model just always runs but I guess I need a new control box.
I got a little sick and tired of the pilot not wanting to start in the fall with the initial start-up of the boiler. The solution was an electronic ignition on a high efficiency boiler. This seems to be the way to go. But I didn’t stop there. The baseboard heaters were looking old and crappy. Picked up some slick covers from BaseboardHeaterCovers.com and wow, what a difference. No more pilot lighting, no more ugly heaters.
I was told to NEVER turn off the pilot light as the burner was cast iron and would rust out. The miniscule amount of gas used was a safe & cheap way to keep it dry in high humidity such as NY had this year. My furnace is 39 years old and has never need servicing although I do look at it for safety’s sake.
What could the issue be if you replaced the thermocupple and pilot still wont stay lit?
