Thank you Bob for tutorial …. it really help for me!
Hi Bob,
I shut my hot water breaker off when I’m not using hot water. I turn it on at night when I run my dishwasher & take my shower, I use cold water to wash my clothes. I feel that I’m saving money by doing this. Do I???
Thanks Anne
Hi Anne,
You are possibly saving some money by washing in cold water, but tank type water heaters are not designed to be turned on and off like you are doing. For that type of use you should be using either a tankless or a point of use water heater.
Think of a tank type water heater as a big flywheel. A flywheel takes little energy to keep moving but a lot of energy to get going. Your tank type water heater is similar in that you are having to reheat all your water to the point that you have hot water discharging from the unit. That is wasteful.

Should you put a cap on the water heater faucet if it is leaking?
All of you know that Water heaters are one of the most essential appliances in our homes. They silently work away providing hot water whenever we want.
