Older less efficient furnaces (less than 80% AFUE) do not use electronic ignition but rather a small constantly burning flame called a standing pilot.
Sometimes that flame goes out and needs to be re-lit. And since there is simply no heat from your furnace if the pilot flame is out, knowing how to light a furnace pilot is essential.
In the tutorial How to Light a Gas Furnace Pilot I'll describe how the pilot light and the thermocouple work together, along with steps for preparation and ignition of the standing pilot.
So you can rekindle that old flame and be warm this winter!
