TRIAC

TRIAC - TRIode for Alternating Current

Definition: TRIAC is an acronym standing for "TRIode for Alternating Current" and is the primary electronic device used in an electronic dimmer. The TRIAC is technically known as a bidirectional triode thyristor.

A TRIAC is a solid state electronic switch or relay that quickly turns the power to a lamp on and off up to 120 times per second. The longer the power is turned off the dimmer the light output. The on and off sequencing occurs so fast it is not perceptible to the naked eye. Since the TRIAC is only turning power on and off it allows the lamp to be dimmed but generates very little heat.

Also Known As: Triac, TRIode for Alternating Current, chop switch, bidirectional triode thyristor
