Choosing the Right Nail for the Job

Common and Finish Nails

Although there are many varieties of nails, they can be broken down into common nails and finish nails. Common nails are characterized by large, flat heads and are best suited for general wood construction where it doesn’t matter if you can see the head after it’s driven into the wood. Finish nails have small, narrow heads that can be driven below the surface of the wood with a tool called a nail punch. Within the two broad categories, there is a wide variety of nails.
