Materials

From Jason Ross, for About.com

  • Steel:
The most common, steel nails are less expensive but unable to stand up well to the elements. (They are designed for interior use).
  • Galvanized:
These are coated with zinc for resistance to elements and are best suited for outdoor use.
  • Cement coated:
CC nails are coated with adhesive for better holding power.
  • Bright:
Since these have no corrosion-resistant finish, they are best suited for interior use.
  • Other metals:
Many other metals are used to make nails. These materials often stand up well to corrosion and can therefore be used outdoors.
  • Plastic composite:
These do not rust or stain, and they make stronger connections than metal nails.
