Cleaning up the Muck Left Behind

Clean Up
Once the basement is drained, there will be a mess left behind.
  • Shovel out the mud and debris while you can and while it is still sort of wet.
  • Wash down walls with a hose removing as much silt as possible before it dries and hardens.
  • If sewage has entered the basement then sanitize the floors and walls. You can use a commercial solution or scrub walls and floors with a disinfecting solution of 1 cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water.
  • If you use fuel oil then oil stains can be caused by damaged oil storage tanks. Again, commercial products often available from fuel-oil dealers are available to help with the clean up. These products come in a variety of forms including powder and aerosol spray.
  • To clean up oil stains and odors you'll have to manually clean up most of the mess. Then wipe up any remaining excess oil and apply the product according to manufacturer's instructions. Often, after the cleaning product has set up, you just need to sweep up the absorbed material.
