Specialized Chisel: Lathe Turning Tools
Under the umbrella of wood chisels fall the very popular lathe turning tools, with a great many different shapes for at least as many tasks. Lathe chisels generally are longer than standard woodworking chisels. Here are two of the most popular shapes for turning:
- Gouges: These U-shaped chisels with a bevel to the outside are primarily used to rough out square wood at the beginning of a project and to scoop out wood on projects such as cups and bowls.
- Skews: This type has an edge that is skewed relative to the length of the blade. Skews are usually used for detailing.
