Tool Overview
Even more than the cordless drill, the cordless circular saw is part of a new generation of powerful cordless tools. With a cordless saw like this however, you really want an 18V battery pack if you can swing the price.

Cordless saws will have a smaller blade size and spin at a slightly slower speed, but are great for light to medium duty tasks like cutting plywood or a 2x4. The limited battery life of these medium duty saws under extended use is the trade off for convenience. Pros use more powerful versions of these saws with features such as worm drive. But for the home repair shop, these more basic units are great.

If you plan on doing extended cutting, again make sure you have two battery packs charging so you can alternate and keep working. But if the job is truly heavy duty, you're best bet is a powered circular saw.
