How the Circular Saw is Used:

The Circular Saw is used for cutting paneling or ripping lumber and making crosscuts and is also excellent for making miter cuts and angled bevel cuts.

It is used for projects where fast straight cuts of relative accuracy are required through heavier material. Typically used for cutting wood, this saw can also cut plastic, metal and masonry with the use of special blades.

How To Use a Circular Saw

Variations:

Variations of this tool include a corded version which has no battery pack but is powered with line voltage. Corded versions are great for long hard cuts through difficult materials that would quickly wear down a battery pack. Other variations affect the drive system. The tool shown here is direct drive, but other types exist that use a gear system such as a worm drive.

Materials of Construction:

The cordless circular saw has a metal base and a combination of high impact plastic and metal alloy for the body.

Tool Tips and Advice:

Even more than the cordless drill, the cordless circular saw is part of a new generation of powerful cordless tools. With a cordless saw like this however, you really want an 18V battery pack if you can swing the price.

Cordless saws will have a smaller blade size and spin at a slightly slower speed, but are great for light to medium duty tasks like cutting plywood or a 2x4. The limited battery life of these medium duty saws under extended use is the trade off for convenience. Pros use more powerful versions of these saws with features such as worm drive. But for the home repair shop, these more basic units are great.

If you plan on doing extended cutting, again make sure you have two battery packs charging so you can alternate and keep working. But if the job is truly heavy duty, you're best bet is a powered circular saw.
