Top 10 Plumbing Tools You Need to Have

Sunday May 18, 2008

Plumbing repairs around the house can be done easily if you have the right tools. However, I know many people who have unsuccessfully used the incorrect plunger or who have spent an unnecessary $80 to snake a toilet or tub drain when they could have easily done it themselves.

In the tutorial overview Top 10 Plumbing Tools, I review the essential plumbing tools you need in your toolbox.

Augers, plungers, tape, wrenches, faucet packing, tubing cutters, valve seat dresser, they're all covered and explained in easy to understand language. So get to know the difference between a cup plunger and a flange plunger and much more.

And if you have nominations or suggestions for your favorite plumbing tool, let us know!

Our home is almost 3 years old. In the last week, when we flush the toilet, and it is just about done running, we hear a very loud noise almost like a tug boat is coming through. It does not happen every time. We checked the exterior vents and they look to be clear. Do we need to call a plumber?

(3) Flushless in New York says:

Me and my husband recently “took the plunge” and purchased our first house. It seems that’s not the only plunge we were meant for. Both descendants of a long line of apartment dwellers we were both perplexed when our upstairs toilet refused to flush. We press the handle, it makes the noise, the water goes round and round, and so does any refuse we left in it that is making us want to flush it in the first place. While we are adjusting to our new mortgage in addition to a few initial unforseen home repairs as well as the soaring prices of everyday expenses such as gas and milk, our home repair budget is depleted. We turned to your site to try our hand at diy plumbing. Although extremely informative, all the the suggested solutions (plunging and auger) have not yeilded any results. We also poured water into the back of the tank to increase the water pressure to no avail. It does not overflow but will not flush the contents down completely. It will only let some water out as it weakly flushes but does not drain. What should we do next. We are used to just calling the super up to fix it. Help!

Hi,

If the auger did not work then the clog or obstruction in the waste line is beyond your toilet and may well require a plumber’s snake which will go far beyond your toilet. Time to call the super I think.

We bled all the air out of our water lines to solve the noisy toilet problem. That worked for a couple of weeks. Now we changed all the insides in the tank and no more problem.

ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEN WE FLUSH OUR TOILET, WE HEAR A LOUD NOISE. IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOUD GRINDING MOTOR. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF WE NEED A PLUMBER OR IF WE CAN FIX IT OURSELF? THANK YOU

I’d get a plumber for loud grinding motor noises coming from a toilet, but that’s just me…
