Shortcut for Securing Three or More Wires With Wire Nuts

By , About.com Guide

Plastic ties around 3 or more wires help keep them tight for more secure fastening by wire nuts

If you ever tried to secure three or more wires together using a wire nut you know how difficult it can be to keep them together both before and after the wire nut is secured. Wire nuts are great but rely upon consistent lengths of exposed copper wire for each wire to be tightened under the wire nut cap.

A great tip I've used is to use plastic ties to secure the wires together when using a wire nut with three or more wires. This keeps them secure together as you move the wires back into the box, where stresses on the wires can sometimes loosen the connection. In the photo above I was tapping into an overhead garage door opener to extend a circuit for an outlet. You can see how the wires are secured with the plastic ties creating a neat and secure installation.

Try it next time, it's easy and you end up with a better quality installation.
